A Project by Ana Tiscornia

March 7 – April 13, 2013

The gallery is pleased to present Ana Tiscornia's first solo project at the gallery. Ana Tiscornia's discrete objects, painting and collage, result from the manipulation and intervention of pieces of furniture, wood letters, cardboard, and text. These constructions and visual rearrangements of everyday objects appear both obscure and familiar. They draw upon the paradoxical bond between architecture – a language of construction par excellence – with that of destruction and dislocation. In rearranging the various materials Tiscornia seeks a potential poetry – a kind of cartography of social oblivion – that simultaneously exposes but also recovers scattered fragments of the utopian project. Although specific political circumstances and catastrophes prompt her to make these pieces, these works look to a shared global moment and do not literally correspond to any one specific incident or place.

Born in Uruguay, Ana Tiscornia has lived and worked in New York since 1991. Beyond the artistic practice, she is also a writer, critic and curator. Selected exhibitions include: Point of Contact Gallery, Syracuse, New York, NY, (2012); Esa Vara, Modernity and emplacement, Museum of Contemporary Art and Design, San Jose, Costa Rica (2012); Tridimensional, Alejandra Von Hartz Gallery, Miami, FL (2011); Microwave, eight, Josée Bienvenu Gallery, New York (2011); The Last Book, Zentral Bibliothek, Zürich, Switzerland (2010); The Disappeared, University of Wyoming Art Museum, Laramie, WY, Centro Cultural Matucana 100, Santiago, Chile, Centro de Formación de la Cooperación Española en La Antigua Guatemala, Guatemala, Museo de Arte Moderno, Bogotá, Colombia, and Art Museum of the Americas, OAS (2009, 2008); IX Havana Biennial, Cuba (2006).
